A message from Artistic Director, Mark Coughlan
I am delighted to present the 2024 concert program for the Government House Foundation. It is always a pleasure to program music for the stunning Government House Ballroom, a unique and historically important building and such a perfect space for musical performances. Together with the delightful Julie Michael Garden, we are very lucky to be able to enjoy high quality music-making in such attractive and ambient surroundings.
From the start of our Music on the Terrace series, some 18 years ago, we have always had a strong focus on supporting young people in the arts and providing important performance opportunities for our talented rising stars. In our first Music on the Terrace concert we are again partnering with OPUSWA Arts Orchestra and Chorale to present the every-popular Opera Gala. This will feature the brightest emerging vocal talent in Western Australia, singing some of the best-loved highlights from the world of opera and supported by a full symphony orchestra.
It will be a great pleasure to welcome back to the Ballroom the brilliant London-based Australian concert pianist Piers Lane. Piers has performed in Music on the Terrace many times and is much-loved by Perth audiences. In June he returns to perform the complete Chopin Nocturnes by candlelight, reprising his spectacular performance of these beautiful works from 2012. This will be an event not to be missed. Rachelle Durkin is one of Australia’s finest sopranos, having honed her craft over 20 years in New York where she regularly sang at the Metropolitan Opera. Rachelle and Akiko Miyazawa’s string ensemble Cygnus Arioso will perform a program of heart-warming music by Mozart, Tchaikovsky and Fauré. In our final Music on the Terrace concert we are excited to welcome back the winner of the 2023 Sydney International Piano Competition, Jeonghwan Kim. Jeonghwan performed for us in August 2023 to huge critical acclaim and this year he returns to perform one of the most popular pieces ever written, Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No 2 with the OpusWA Arts Orchestra.
Our musical year begins and ends once again with relaxed, family-friendly concerts in the Julie Michael Garden. We start with a bang – the music of Frank Sinatra and his contemporaries performed by the dynamic Adam Hall and The Velvet Playboys. This will be a high energy, fun-filled performance of some of the best-known standards of all time. In December we welcome back the Western Australian Jazz Project. This outstanding big band will close off the year with a vibrant and memorable program of jazz classics. Thank you for your support of Music on the Terrace and I look forward to seeing you at Government House in 2024.
