Perth Symphonic Chorus (formerly Collegium Symphonic Chorus) under the baton of Dr Margaret Pride will present Handel’s Messiah on Saturday December 19th, 7.30pm at the Perth Concert Hall with soloists Sara Macliver (soprano), Sally-Anne Russell (mezzo-soprano), Richard Butler (tenor) and James Clayton (Bass).
Renowned for its moving, dramatic and memorised performances of this work, the choir will again highlight the depths and celebrations of a libretto that delivers the Christmas message with joy and wonder. The sheer melodic inventiveness of Handel’s masterpiece allows the listener to indulge in an abundance of great well known arias and revel in the majesty and power of grand choruses unmatched by any other composer.
This year’s soloists will bring much to the performance: Sara Macliver’s pure gossamer-like soprano vocal colours; Sally-Anne Russell’s rich mezzo-soprano textures; Richard Butler’s highly informed Baroque tenor arias; and James Clayton’s assured and dramatic interpretations of famous bass arias.
Although intended for the Easter season, for English speaking countries it is mostly performed at Christmas time, and indeed for many music lovers the end of the year festivities are not complete without it.
