In just a few days, we’re thrilled to once again be hosting Perth Rotary’s annual New Year’s Eve concerts, led by Music Director Mark Coughlan and featuring the magnificent Vienna Pops Orchestra, plus an exciting selection of internationally celebrated WA soloists. We’ve had the pleasure of hosting these special, charitable New Year’s Eve concerts at Perth Concert Hall for decades, making them a tradition for many classical music lovers in Perth.
Audiences can choose between two magical concerts, the Evening Gala or the Matinée. Gala attendees will count down to 2023 with joyous and uplifting music inside our grand auditorium and enjoy a night of dancing after the show. Introduced in 2018, the shorter, family-friendly Matinée is ideal for those hoping to start their New Year’s celebrations early.

This year’s soloists include tenor Paul O'Neill, whose international career has seen him perform in opera houses throughout Europe and Australasia; soprano and rising star Jesse Linke, a recent WAAPA graduate who has appeared as a soloist with the Perth Symphony Orchestra and Freeze Frame Opera; and WASO’s Principal Flute Andrew Nicholson, who has enjoyed a long and distinguished international career as a flautist both in symphony orchestras and in solo performances.
About this year’s concert, Music Director Mark Coughlan said,
“This is my 10th year conducting the Vienna Pops New Year’s Eve concerts and it has been such an enjoyable and rewarding experience. Each year we bring together some of the finest musicians to ever come out of WA and invite a group of talented young performers and early career professionals to join us to create some genuinely exciting and dynamic music-making. It’s wonderful for us to be raising money to support the outstanding work of Perth Rotary while bringing a joyful, uplifting musical celebration to our audiences and having a great time while we do it!
This year the concert will include some of the most beautiful music from Puccini’s La Boheme, the most popular opera ever written, as well as some favourites by Mozart and Johann Strauss and even a spectacular tribute to Elvis Presley played by electric violin duo, Varley Strings. Of course, as always we will finish both concerts with the Blue Danube by Johann Strauss."

The Vienna Pops New Year's Eve concerts are not only a great way to welcome in 2023, but also to give back to the community. The net proceeds of these concerts are retained by the Perth Rotary Community Fund which supports charity partners and initiatives, mainly through the Rotary International District Grant System. Some key projects include Passages Resource Centre, Path of Hope, Reflections, Kimberley Dental Team, Cambodia Family Support and Ending Polio.
You can also make a tax-deductible donation to Perth Rotary through Perth Concert Hall here.
