Meet Shaan, the voice behind Bollywood's biggest stars

Singer, composer, actor and television personality Shantanu Mukherjee, better known as Shaan, is considered one of the most versatile singers in Indian cinema. After starting his career singing jingles for advertisements, Shaan has become one of the highest-paid and most well-known playback singers in Bollywood.

Over the past four decades, Shaan has released multiple studio albums, including his 2000 album Tanha Dil, which won the MTV Asia Award for Best Solo Album and launched his career as a singer. Today, Shaan has 6,000,000 monthly listeners on Spotify with 34 albums in his discography, amongst multiple singles and compilation albums.

However, Shaan is perhaps best known for his work as a playback singer. A playback singer, also known as a ghost singer, is a singer whose vocals are pre-recorded to be mimed by actors in films. Playback singers are frequently used in South Asian films and sometimes used in Hollywood films and musicals. Throughout his career, Shaan has recorded more than 3,000 songs as a playback singer and has provided the voice for several leading Bollywood actors. Key films Shaan has worked on as a playback singer include Fanaa (2006), Om Shanti Om (2007) and 3 Idiots (2009).
