This July, acclaimed Australian philosopher and ethicist Peter Singer will head to Perth Concert Hall for a special evening of thought-provoking conversation. Live on stage, Singer will discuss some of the most pressing issues of our time and delve into his extensive body of work.
The show coincides with the release of his latest book Animal Liberation Now (due to be released in June this year), a revised edition of his groundbreaking 1975 book Animal Liberation: A New Ethics for Our Treatment of Animals, which is widely considered a seminal text in the animal rights movement.
While Singer is undoubtedly one of the world’s leading animal liberation advocates, having inspired a global movement towards greater compassion and concern for all sentient beings, he has also written extensively on many other topics including global poverty, effective altruism, environmentalism, technology and bioethics.
Last week, the ABC spoke with Singer about the rise of artificial intelligence and what we as humans need to consider as this technology progresses, especially in the increasingly likely scenario that robots become capable of experiencing consciousness and emotions.
