Widely considered one of the greatest and most influential opera singers of the 20th century, Maria Callas, often referred to as the "La Divina" or "The Divine One," was a legendary Greek-American soprano whose voice and artistry left an indelible mark on the world of opera. Her legacy, like her voice, continues to resonate through the ages, inspiring generations of opera enthusiasts and performers.
Callas' vocal range, dramatic intensity, and emotional depth were unparalleled. Whether she was performing the tragic arias of Puccini, the fiery roles of Verdi, or the bel canto masterpieces of Donizetti and Bellini, her interpretations were nothing short of extraordinary. Her acting skills were as remarkable as her singing; her ability to convey the deepest feelings of the characters she portrayed on stage made her a true vocal and dramatic powerhouse, and she introduced a level of authenticity and drama that elevated the art form of opera.
100 years since her birth, Callas will return to the stage in 2023 with the help of hologram technology. As she tragically died in 1977 at the age of 53, many opera music fans have never had the opportunity to hear Callas’ beautiful voice live in concert – until now. West Australian audiences will soon be able to witness Callas perform some of her most famous arias by Bizet, Verdi, Puccini and more on the stage of our grand auditorium.
Presented by the European Union in partnership with the Consulate of Greece in Perth, with support from the Government of Western Australia, this will be Perth Concert Hall’s first-ever holographic performance. We could not be more thrilled for this debut and to have one of history’s most iconic singers at the centre.
