For those that are unaware a very important week just passed in our nation’s history, National Reconciliation Week May 27 to June 3.

This year two significant anniversaries fall within the week: 50 years since the 1967 referendum and 25 years since the historic High Court Mabo decision. To commemorate this occasion, here at the Hall we are hosting a National Reconciliation Week exhibit, ‘We Are No Longer Shadows’. Pieces of free standing human scaled figures each with their own backstory.

The exhibition revolves around art pieces that were created by indigenous and non-indigenous young men, aged 18 – 28 from Wandoo Reintegration Centre. This project in particular involved two professional artists, Gordon Mitchell and Matt McVeigh working with these young men to capture the essence of each personal experience, their own reconciliation journey. It can also be considered as a two way communicative tool for the viewer to reflect on what we can all do to right the wrongs of our past.

The exhibition will run from May 27 to June 17 during the Hall’s opening hours of 9am – 5pm and during show times. Feel free to come through and view these astounding pieces and vote on your favourite piece. Most of the pieces can be purchased with information regarding prices within the exhibits brochure found at our Front of House Desk or here. Proceeds from each work will donated to Sister Kate’s Children 1934 – 1953 Aboriginal Corporation, which supports those from the Stolen Generation.
